- The mother felt that Jeewish people were unaccepting of others yet they were the best people to deal with when it came recieving an education.
-The children began to break away from the mother and would defy her purposely.
-Richie had been arrested and falsely accused of dealing heroine. Though the charges were dropped, the mother felt that she should prevent any of her younger children from running into these types of difficulties.
- James questioned his identity as an African American or a Jewish male due to the discrimination he would face at school.
-As a child, the mother became pregnant by a black male. She was constantly in fear because this type of relationship was not accepted in society and as a penalty her boyfriend, Peter, could be killed.
